The Health Status of Romani Women in Bulgaria

The Open Society Institute supported the Center for Interethnic Dialogue and Tolerance (Amalipe) to research and produce this report on the health status of Romani women in Bulgaria. The results are intended to provide a framework for developing health policies that are inclusive of and sensitive to the needs of Romani women.

The following topics are addressed in this report:

  • Review of national policies that affect Romani women.
  • Assessment of government and NGO programs aimed at improving the general health of Roma communities.
  • Surveys of Romani women on their health status, including sexual and reproductive health, access to care and insurance, smoking, and maternal and child care.
  • Recommendations to improve the health of Romani women in Bulgaria.
