A report by the Roma Center for Democracy illustrates how local communities can successfully implement health policies adopted by national governments as part of the Decade of Roma Inclusion.
The report, Improving Access to Health Care for the Roma Community in Valjevo, provides a detailed look at the experience of the Roma community of Valjevo, Serbia, in implementing the national action plan for Roma health developed by the Serbian government. It also discusses persistent health problems among Roma in Valjevo and obstacles that Roma people face in accessing health care.
The report provides recommendations for other communities seeking to tailor national action plans to local contexts. One key factor is securing the cooperation and involvement of relevant partners, including local government agencies, health centers, Roma organizations and community representatives, and the local media.
