In June 2023, the Open Society Foundations launched a competitive Applied AI in Journalism Challenge as part of an effort to advance prototype applications of AI in mission-driven newsrooms around the world. Over 100 teams submitted applications; 12 were chosen to receive a $5,000 grant, and invited to a final judging session in Chiang Mai, Thailand, to choose one winner to receive a $25,000 grant to develop their work further.
This report explains the project, with details of the leading proposals that were presented by teams from groups in Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, and more.
