Tsunami Impact on Burma

  • Date
  • January 28, 2005

While Burma itself was spared the scale of death and destruction caused by the tsunami in neighboring countries, its citizens—particularly Burmese migrant workers in Thailand—were severely affected. Between 2,500 and 3,000 Burmese migrants were killed by the tsunami, and 4,000 to 7,000 are still missing.

This briefing note covers tsunami-related developments affecting the Burmese population inside Burma and in Thailand from January 4-28, 2005.
