This book concerns managing the arts in turbulent social, economic, and cultural contexts. Many art managers of state-funded cultural institutions still struggle with transforming their organizational structures to be ready to meet the demands of the future. At the same time, a vibrant scene of new art organizations and cultural activists has emerged. Although often neglected by the public subsidy mechanisms for the arts, these independent players still continue to fight for the consolidation of their production work and for the securing of their organizational survival.
In order to successfully shape and further develop cultural life in their surroundings, both public and independent art organizations need to be able to rely on strong organizational structures and sufficient management capacities on the side of the people who work in them. Thus, strategic planning and increasing proficiency in organizational development and management become key factors for the successful mastering of the challenges which cultural organizations face in turbulent environments.
