From Nuremberg to Syria: One Man’s Search for Justice (May 2, 2014)

Beginning in 1945 with his prosecution of war criminals during the Nuremberg Tribunal, the Benjamin Ferencz has long focused on issues of international criminal justice and world peace. A strong supporter of the International Criminal Court, Ferencz advocates steps to replace the “rule of force with the rule of law.”

At the age of 27, Ferencz became chief prosecutor for the United States in the Einsatzgruppen Case, in which 22 Nazi defendants were charged with murdering over one million people. Ferencz’s primary objective had been to establish a legal precedent that would encourage a more humane and secure world in the future.

Jim Goldston, executive director of the Open Society Justice Initiative, recently came together with Ferencz for a discussion of his life in pursuit of the rule of law, from his involvement in the Nuremberg trials to prospects for holding accountable current and future perpetrators of grave crimes.
