The Hidden Benefit of Uncertainty

Talking Nonsense (and Benefiting from It): A Conversation with Jamie Holmes (January 13, 2016)

In a complex global landscape, it is increasingly difficult to make sense of the world’s unpredictable nature. This ambiguity takes a toll on our individual psychologies and how we conduct our work, build relationships, and make decisions.

Jamie Holmes, author of Nonsense: The Power of Not Knowing, recently delivered an illuminating talk on the positive power of ambiguity. Utilizing new insights from the nexus of social psychology and cognitive science, he discussed how we confront and are confronted by ambiguity in our daily lives. Pointing to the hidden benefit of uncertainty, Holmes also argued the advantages of confusion and how to harness uncertainty to inspire learning and creativity in our personal—and professional—lives.
