Monks, Media, and the Military: The Protests in Burma (October 5, 2007)

In August, a wave of peaceful, pro-democracy demonstrations broke out in Burma. After the military government began using force to crack down on protesters, their numbers swelled into the tens of thousands. Dozens have since been killed and thousands arrested.

At a recent event from Open Society and Asia Society, activists—including the leader of the Burmese monks, speaking via teleconference—provided eyewitness reports on the crisis and called for increased international pressure on the Burmese government.
