Return to Homs won this year’s World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and will screen this month at the New Directors/New Films Festival in New York. The film was produced by Proaction Film, a partner of the Open Society Arab Regional Office.

The Syrian uprising has marked its third anniversary and has become a human tragedy where an estimated of 140,000 people have been killed, 6.3 million have become internally displaced, and more than 2 million have fled to neighboring countries. Return to Homs provides a rare perspective into how the conflict has particularly affected the city of Homs, where there has been high degree of sectarian violence and humanitarian aid has been very limited, and helps to explain some of the larger issues of the conflict.

A light lunch will be served.

Speakers

  • Talal Derki, Director
  • Orwa Nyrabia, Producer/Cinematographer (via videoconference)
  • Anthony Richter, Associate Director of Open Society’s Middle East and North Africa Initiatives, will moderate.
