Vetting of UN Peacekeepers: Reportage From the Ground (July 8, 2014)

The Open Society Foundations recently supported four reports on the selection and vetting process of United Nations peacekeepers. The reports were produced by a coalition of NGOs working to introduce more transparency and accountability into the selection of UN peacekeepers in each of their respective countries: India; Bangladesh; Nepal; and Nigeria, which are among the world’s top contributing nations. The coalition includes: the Asian Centre for Human Rights (India); the Advocacy Forum (Nepal); and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (Nigeria).

The reports outline the policies and practices of the peacekeeper selection process in each country and identify the major barriers to ensuring that perpetrators of grave human rights violations are excluded from selection. This event features a brief presentation on the findings of all four countries, followed by a discussion on how the reports’ findings and recommendations can be implemented at the national and international level.
