OSI Baltimore’s Drug Addiction Treatment Program presented a forum on integrating buprenorphine treatment and primary care at Baltimore’s community health centers.

Buprenorphine is a safe and effective treatment for heroin addiction that the Food and Drug Administration recently approved for use in the United States. It is the first opioid approved for physicians to prescribe in this country since 1914. Doctors, counselors, and patients from community health centers in Baltimore Family Health Centers of Baltimore, Park West Medical Center, and Total Health Care discussed their experiences with this treatment approach. The presentation included data from over 100 patients who have used buprenorphine.

The forum provided time to discuss the following questions:

  • What is the appropriate duration of buprenorphine treatment?
  • To what extent are Baltimore s community health clinics integrating primary care and addiction treatment?
  • What are the respective roles of methadone and buprenorphine in the treatment of heroin addiction?
