Tools for Human Rights Litigation: Tracking Developments at the ECHR

NEW YORK—The Open Society Justice Initiative is one of the world’s leading international human rights litigation groups, having been involved in over 70 human rights cases before international and national courts around the world.

This year, as part of our efforts to promote effective litigation as a tool for strengthening human rights, we have produced a series of briefing papers and case summaries focused on the work of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

This series includes the following:

1) An update on the application of the "significant disadvantage" citerion introduced by the court in 2010 to reduce its case load.

2) Summaries of 26 ECHR judgments awaiting effective implementation, as presented by civil society groups to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

3)  Summaries of 31 cases in which the court set out specific remedies for governments to enact, under Article 46 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

4) Summaries of 49 recent decisions relating to the prohibition of torture and degrading treatment (Article 3) within the Russian Federation.

5) A digest of  state violence cases relating to the right to life (Article 2) and the prohibition of torture and degrading treatment (Article 3)—excluding detention cases—delivered between January 2013 and October 2014.

6) Summaries of 17 abuse of detainees cases relating to the right to life (Article 2) and the prohibition of torture and degrading treatment (Article 3), also delivered between January 2013 and October 2014.

In addition, on our website you can also find:
