Environmental injustices are obvious. While the poor and minorities are often living amid the worst environmental conditions, the more affluent members of society tend to enjoy isolated bubbles of cleaner air and better water.
Environmental justice, the fair distribution of environmental benefits and harms, is a bold new way to consider human rights and environmental opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
"Environmental Justice: Bursting Bubbles," the Summer 2004 issue of Local Governance Brief, is the first to explore environmental justice in the region. The issue features articles, case studies, and news items that examine ways to make everyone—from global policymakers to local residents—aware of inequalities and to build stronger communities.
