After Westgate: Investigating Kenyan Security Forces for Human Rights Violations

After Westgate: Security and Human Rights in Kenya (October 31, 2013)

In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack on Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, on September 21, many Kenyan and international human rights defenders are concerned about possible human rights violations by Kenyan security forces as they investigate and seek accountability for the attack.

To discuss security and human rights in Kenya, two prominent Kenyan human rights defenders, Hussein Khalid and Francis Auma, came together with the Open Society Justice Initiative’s Jonathan Horowitz, who recently completed a fact-finding mission in Kenya, and moderator Sarah Pray, senior policy analyst for African affairs at Open Society.

The panelists discussed their research into allegations of human rights abuses by the Kenyan security forces. They also offered recommendations on U.S. policy toward Kenya and, in particular, U.S. assistance to the Kenyan security forces during the ongoing investigation into the terror attacks.
