In a recent discussion, Open Society Fellow Vanda Felbab-Brown looked at seven illicit economies and explained how they can be managed to enhance human security and strengthen the rule of law. Drawing on extensive fieldwork around the world—including, most recently, the Horn of Africa and Indonesia—Felbab-Brown analyzes the drug trade, maritime piracy, the trade in weapons of mass destruction, wildlife and gem smuggling, illicit logging and mining, and trafficking in humans.
